If Europe and the United States really do not want to come to Ukraine’s assistance, Putin’s “wink and nod” denials give them a fig leave to grasp – a slim thread to explain the lack of meaningful action. Russia’s two big lies serve the interests of politicians in Europe and the United States, who worry about unemployment, economic growth, and the next election, not about the long-term consequences of making a 19th century rogue tyrant one of the world’s top powers. After all, we have to think of Realpolitik, not what is right.
